At TH9, Dark Elixir is your most valuable resource — every drop funds Queen and King upgrades. Strong farming bases keep the DE Storage and Drill deep in the core, sacrifice outer Gold and Elixir, and force attackers to spend their army before reaching DE.
Town Hall 9 farming is almost entirely about one thing: Dark Elixir. Every Archer Queen level costs DE, and at TH9 you're pushing her from level 1 toward 25+ — a grind that takes months if your base keeps leaking it. The right farming layout makes that grind dramatically faster by making DE genuinely hard to steal.
Gold and Elixir matter, but they're renewable and cheap to steal. Dark Elixir is the bottleneck. A good TH9 farming base treats Gold and Elixir storages as bait — positioned on the outer ring where attackers can reach them easily — while the DE Storage sits deep in the base core, surrounded by your best defenses.
The tradeoff is real: you will lose Gold and Elixir in every raid. That's intentional. Attackers who grab outer storages and leave satisfied never reach the DE. If you try to protect everything, you protect nothing.
The DE Storage should be in your base core, at least two wall layers deep from any direction. It pairs well with your X-Bow (which covers the corridor attackers must cross to reach it) and your Archer Queen (who can activate against armies that breach the outer compartments).
Your Dark Elixir Drill also needs attention. At TH9 you have one Drill — place it inside the second compartment ring, not on the outer edge. An exposed Drill is a free 2,000+ DE every hour for Giant-Healer farmers circling your base.
The most effective TH9 farming designs use a sacrificial ring: Gold Storages, Elixir Storages, and Gold/Elixir Collectors all placed near the base perimeter. Attackers with Giants and Healers or mass Goblins will clear these and leave. They triggered Mortars, Air Defenses, and Spring Traps doing it — and they never touched your DE.
This design consistently outperforms "protect everything" layouts at TH9. The latter spread defenses thin trying to cover all storages, which means none of them are properly protected. Concentrate your best defenses on DE, sacrifice the rest.
The two most common TH9 farming attacks are Giant-Healer (Giants tank while Healers keep them alive, sweeping through outer buildings) and mass Goblin (Goblins targeting storages directly with double loot bonus). Both rely on clearing the outside ring fast.
Giant-Healer armies can't crack a proper inner core without burning through Spells and time. Mass Goblin armies move fast but deal low damage per troop — they'll take outer storages and bounce off walls protecting your DE. Place your Wall segments with no easy gaps on the core compartments.

What is the most valuable resource to protect at TH9?
Dark Elixir. Every Queen and King upgrade costs DE, and the amounts scale quickly. Gold and Elixir are easier to recover — DE upgrades take days or weeks to complete, so each steal sets you back significantly.
Should the DE Storage or the Town Hall be in the center at TH9?
The DE Storage. At TH9, your Town Hall being sniped gives attackers one star and a small shield — losing your DE Storage costs far more in the long run. Most experienced TH9 farmers leave the TH semi-exposed and bury the DE Storage behind their best defenses.
How do I stop Giant-Healer armies from reaching my Dark Elixir?
Place Air Defenses where they can target Healers early in the raid, before the Giants reach your core. Air Defenses that fire on Healers from range kill them before they can sustain the tank line — most Giant-Healer attacks collapse quickly once the Healers are gone.
Is a TH9 farming base the same as an anti-3-star base?
No. A farming base prioritizes protecting resources over preventing stars. It deliberately exposes some buildings to bait attackers away from your DE. An anti-3-star base protects every building equally to deny percentage. Use separate layout slots for each.
How often should I change my TH9 farming base?
When you notice the same attack consistently reaching your DE Storage. Most TH9 farming bases stay effective for months — the farming meta at TH9 changes slowly. Browse the most-downloaded TH9 farming bases to find what's currently working.
